Monday evening was a cold and wet one in Takapuna as I was looking out of the studio window setting up for the first Auckland ‘The Artist Within’ Book club event – surely no one would want to venture far from their warm fires on a night like this?

I was soon proved wrong as one by one the Creative Adventurers of Auckland appeared at the door to the studio, a little wet and bedraggled, but ready to start their creative inward journey being guided through the ‘The Artist Within’ by US artist, coach and author Whitney Freya.

As it was the first session there was a lot of talking on my behalf to introduce the adventurers to the book, and concepts of exercising the right side of your brain to open doors and remove blocks in other areas of your life.  I wondered if they would be as enthusiastic as I was?  Would they feel they had been transported back to High School? I ignored my left brain doubting voice as I carried on through the introduction of the concepts and the 8 principles of design used by Whitney to demonstrate the ART that is your life…. the adventurers were very quiet.

Then I gave them the first creative exercise to try and all of my left brain doubts disappeared. I was enthralled watching them so engrossed in sketching, doodling, stickering, gluing and playing – even those who said they were not artistic were in amongst it all.

We had a wonderful night sharing laughter, stories, creativity and personal moments over our creations – all washed down with a good cuppa and much needed biscuits and chocolate.

What more could you ask for on a wet evening in Auckland?  We are all looking forward to the next gathering on 6th October when the weather will have improved and maybe, just maybe we will get to create outside. Who knows next time could be a wine and nibbles creative night.  Now there’s an idea!

If you live in Auckland and would like to join us please contact me here… the more adventurers we have on the journey the better – climb aboard!

The Book club meets on the 1st Monday of each month at Lake House Arts Centre, Takapuna – for more information check out the Book club page.
