I have a confession to make. Over the Christmas break instead of being in the studio painting, I binge-watched all of the Harry Potter movies including Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. OK, I feel better now I have got that off my chest.
From the first time I picked up a friends copy of “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” about 17 years ago I was completely hooked. I immediately went out and bought the first 2 books then devoured all of the new ones as they came through.
Confession number two – yes I was one of those people who had the new books on backorder and then booked a day off work to read it from cover to cover the day the latest edition dropped on my doorstep.
I went to the movies and queued in anticipation for each one movie to come out with popcorn and ice cream in hand – and now I own all of the movies on DVD (just in case Netflix make the grave mistake of ever deleting them).
Imagine my excitement when I finally got to visit Harry Potter World in London on a visit back to the UK. To see behind the scenes and drink an actual cup of butter beer with the other witches and wizards visiting on the day was beyond fantastical.
I even have Hermione’s wand in my coaching studio, which I sometimes flourish with a swish and flick when a client declares “I’m stuck!”
To say I am a fan is an understatement. I even took an online questionnaire recently to discover what house I would be in at Hogwarts. Griffindor naturally I thought, but oh no I was sorted into Slytherin. I’m still dealing with the shock … enough said.
Anyway, I got to wondering why it is that I return to watch the movies over and over again, what life lessons am I picking up from the stories. So I have listed my top 8 life lessons from the world of Harry Potter:
#1 True friends are always there for you. You don’t need to have heaps of friends just a few you can rely on.
#2 Ask for help when you need it and it will always be given.
#3 Community and friendship are the roots that will support you. When you climb over others to succeed your foundations will be weak.
#4 Self-belief makes anything possible even when others are saying you will fail.
#5 Be yourself at all times. We all have different strengths and when we play to them, great things happen.
#6 Attitude is important when plans fail. Dust yourself off, make a change and you end up just in the right place anyway.
#7 Trust in the magic – the universe has got your back.
#8 Embrace your dark side – we all have a dark and a light side, it is how we bring the darkness into the light and work with it that truly matters. Embrace all of you because you are perfect just as you are.
So are you going to be like Harry, Hermione and Ron and embrace who you are, trust that you are being supported by a friendly universe, and believe in the magic?
If so join me for one of my online experiences let’s make magic together. After all, I do have a magic wand!
