Why Painting Big Feels Easier (and What Painting Small Has Taught Me)

This year I decided to challenge myself to take part in the 100 day project. So far for the past 20+ days I’ve been creating mini abstract paintings, each only 5cm square. At the end of the 100 days I am planning on choosing one to paint BIG. #startsmalltopaintbig

It’s been a fascinating journey, I thought painting small would be easy peasy - but one thing has become crystal clear to me: painting BIG is a walk in the park compared to painting small!

If you’re curious about exploring your creativity, I want to share my experience and inspire you to pick up a brush - whether big or small - and start painting your own way.

So here are 10 lessons I’ve learned from this project (so far) and why I believe painting BIG might just be the perfect place for you to start:

1. Why Painting BIG Feels Like Disco Dancing

When you paint BIG, you have room to move and breathe. Your brushstrokes can be bold, sweeping, and gloriously messy. There’s a sense of freedom that comes with a larger canvas - it’s like disco dancing instead of tiptoeing. For beginners, BIG canvases are like training wheels for your creativity: more room to experiment, make mistakes, and still end up with something amazing. Painting small requires precision. That’s like trying to salsa in a cupboard - entirely possible but why would you?

2. Painting Small: The Patience Bootcamp I Didn’t Sign Up For

Painting tiny 5cm squares has been a masterclass in patience. It's like trying to thread a needle while wearing oven mitts. Every stroke matters, and there’s no room for dramatic flourishes. It’s taught me to slow down and appreciate the details. It's teaching me patience (and maybe a little frustration), but it’s also showing me how much easier it feels to go BIG. If you’re someone who overthinks every tiny decision (hello, fellow perfectionists!), starting BIG might just be the therapy you need. If you’re someone who tends to over-analyse, starting with a BIG canvas might help you loosen up and enjoy the process more.

3. BIG Canvases, BIG Confidence: Why Starting Large Might Be Better for Beginners

There’s something incredibly empowering about standing in front of a large canvas. It feels like a magical portal of possibilities. For beginners, tackling a BIG canvas can be a huge confidence boost. When you paint BIG, you’re less likely to get bogged down in the details and more likely to think boldly. If you’ve been putting off trying painting, try beginning with a larger canvas - it might just be the push you need to dive right in. It’s like jumping into the deep end with floaties on - scary at first, but oh-so-liberating.

4. How Painting BIG Helps You Let Go of Overthinking

One of the biggest challenges in art (and life) is overthinking. which is the arch-nemesis of creativity. When you paint small, it’s easy to get caught up in perfectionism. But when you paint BIG, you’re forced to make bold, spontaneous decisions. There’s no time to second-guess yourself because the scale demands action. It’s like ripping off the Band-Aid of self-doubt and saying, “Let’s do this!” Trust me, your inner critic will thank you.

5. Why Abstract Art Feels More Liberating on a Bigger Scale

Abstract art is all about expression, and there’s no better way to express yourself than on a large canvas. When you paint BIG, you can let your emotions flow freely through your brushstrokes. It’s like screaming into a pillow, but way more artistic. If you’ve ever felt intimidated by abstract art, try starting BIG - you might be surprised at how naturally it comes to you. Spoiler alert: It’s way more fun than staying inside the lines.

6. The Joy of Movement: Engaging Your Whole Body

Painting BIG isn’t just a mental exercise - it’s a physical one. You use your whole body to create,as you work. This makes the process feel more dynamic and energising, it's like moving like you’re in a Zumba class (but with fewer awkward dance moves). As women this can be a wonderful way to reconnect with your body and tap into your creative energy. Painting small, by contrast, can feel tight in your neck and shoulders. It's like trying to write a novel on a Post-it note.

7. Learning to Embrace BIG and small in My Art

So far in the first 20+ days of this 100-day project, I’ve learned to appreciate both small and BIG canvases, but I’ve also realised that each has a different purpose. Painting small has taught me patience and precision, while painting BIG has reminded me to let go and have fun. If you’re just starting out, I recommend trying both to see which feels more natural to you.

8. Why BIG Canvases Are the Ultimate Creativity Reset

As women, many of us have spent years putting others’ needs before our own. Painting BIG can feel like reclaiming your space - both literally and metaphorically. It’s a bold, empowering act that says, “I matter, and my creativity matters.” Plus, the physical nature of painting BIG can be incredibly therapeutic, helping you release stress and reconnect with yourself. If you’ve been feeling stuck or uninspired or stressed, grab a BIG canvas and let it all out. It’s cheaper than therapy and way more colourful.

9. The Emotional Release of Painting BIG: Letting Go of Fear and Doubt

There’s something incredibly cathartic about painting BIG. It’s like giving yourself permission to make a mess, to take up space, and to express yourself without apology. For women who’ve spent years doubting their creativity, this can be a powerful way to break free from fear and self-doubt. When you paint BIG, you’re not just creating art - you’re reclaiming your voice. And trust me, the world needs to hear it.

10. How to Start Your Own Large-Scale Creative Project

If you’re ready to take the leap, I encourage you to start your own creative project - whether it’s painting BIG, small, or something in between. Maybe try your own 100 day project (you can start anytime - no rules here!). Or go BIG with a large canvas, some bold colours, and an open mind. Don’t worry about the outcome; just focus on the process. And remember, creativity isn’t about being perfect - it’s about being brave. So grab that brush, channel your inner Frida Kahlo, and let’s make some art!

Final Thoughts

Painting BIG has taught me to embrace freedom, let go of control, and trust my instincts. While painting small has its own unique challenges and rewards, I believe that starting BIG can be a game-changer for anyone looking to explore their creativity.

So, grab a brush, pick up a BIG canvas, and let yourself play. Or try my Dream BIG Paint BIG self-paced Experience. Your inner artist is waiting to come out - and she’s ready to go HUGE!
