Angela Murray – Intuitive Artist
Based in the breathtaking Bay of Plenty, I am an intuitive abstract artist whose work is a celebration of energy, emotion, and the unseen forces that connect us all. My preferred medium is acrylic, which I use to create bold, large-scale canvases that command attention, as well as intimate, evocative pieces on mixed media paper. Each artwork is a portal into a world of feeling, inviting viewers to explore their own inner landscapes.
Originally from the North of England, I followed an inexplicable calling to New Zealand in 2008, embarking on what was meant to be a five-week holiday. From the moment I arrived, I felt an undeniable sense of belonging -a connection to the land and its energy that has profoundly shaped my creative journey. It was here, amidst the raw beauty of Aotearoa, that I truly began to discover my voice as an artist.
My artistic awakening came unexpectedly in 2010 while studying to become a holistic life coach. A class titled “The Art of Coaching” opened my eyes to the transformative power of energy painting. I realised that artists are not just creators but vessels for divine energy, allowing it to flow through them and onto the canvas. This revelation changed everything. I began to train myself to surrender to this energy, to let it guide my hand and infuse my work with a life of its own.
I believe that the energy and emotions I pour into each piece extend far beyond the canvas. They ripple out into the world, touching the hearts of those who encounter them, and returning to both the artist and the owner in unexpected, meaningful ways. My process is deeply intuitive -I never begin with a fixed vision or plan. Instead, I focus on the feeling I want the work to embody, allowing the artwork to reveal itself organically. My role is to listen, to follow the creative nudges, and to trust the process until the piece declares itself complete.
While largely self-taught, my free-spirited approach to painting has been influenced by transformative experiences with two remarkable mentors. In 2011, I studied in Bali with Flora Bowley, an American intuitive artist who taught me the art of bravery, intuition, and embracing the unknown. Later, in 2016, I worked with James Lawrence, an abstract artist in Auckland, who inspired me to explore energy, movement, and the vibrant interplay of colour, while mastering the art of letting go.
My work is an invitation to feel, to connect, and to explore the unseen. It is a testament to the power of intuition and the magic that happens when we allow ourselves to be guided by something greater. Each piece is a unique expression of energy, a conversation between the divine, the artist, and the viewer. I hope my art resonates with you, not just as a visual experience, but as a deeply personal and transformative journey.
Welcome to my world of intuitive abstraction - where energy flows, emotions speak, and art becomes a bridge to the soul.
